Box Score

Los Angeles, CA (March 24) - The Loyola Marymount University softball team swept Ohio State University in non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at the LMU Softball Field, earning a pair of wins in two different ways. The Lions used timely hitting and solid defense in a 3-2 game one win and then broke out the bats for a 11-10 slugfest win in game two.

The Lions improve to 17-11 on the season while Ohio State falls to 15-8. Freshman Kayla Meeks had an impressive day for the Lions, going 4-for-6 on the day, including a 3-for-3 outing in game two. She also earned the win on the mound for the Lions in the second game, allowing just one earned run in 3.1 innings.

Up next for the Lions is a trip to UC Riverside on Wednesday, March 30 before they start play in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference on April 2 against Portland State.

Game One - LMU 3, Ohio State 2
All of the scoring in game one came in the fourth inning as Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning. After hitting a leadoff double to center, Christina Douglas scored to make it 1-0 on a double steal. Brittany Vanderink then hit a double to score Billie Jo Carder, who singled, to make it 2-0.

The Lions wouldn't stay down long as the Lions took advantage of five errors by the Buckeyes. With one out, Tracy Cook reached on an error and advanced on a single by Brittany Bassett. Casey Phillips then hit a single to left field to score the run and advanced Bassett to third.

With the score 2-1 Ohio State, LMU's Kirsten Whitt then ran for Phillips and scored on Emily Foltz' ground ball to third. Also scoring on the play was Bassett to make the score 3-2 LMU.

Kayla Meeks relieved Krystal Kehr in the top of the fifth inning and pitched three hitless innings to pick up the save, her first of the season. Kehr earned the win to improve to 1-3 on the year.

Game Two - LMU 11, Ohio State 10
The second game of the day was a complete opposite of the first as the teams combined for 21 runs on 23 hits in a game that went nearly 2-1/2 hours.

LMU jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after three innings. They scored two runs in the first inning, thanks to a two-RBI single by Cook that scored Margo Pineda and Lisa Abbott. The Lions stretched the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the second inning. In the inning LMU earned RBI singles from both Pineda and Caylin Hornish.

After a run by Ohio State in the top of the third, the Lions looked to break the game open with three runs in the bottom of the third. Abbott delivered a three-run home run to right field to make the score 8-1.

Ohio State, however, stormed back with an eight-run fourth inning that saw them take a 9-8 lead. The Buckeyes brought 13 hitters to the plate. Meeks came in with two outs and earned the out to keep the lead at one.

The Lions would tie the score in the bottom of the fifth when Pineda's single scored Emily Foltz, who walked with one out. Ohio State responded in the top of the sixth to regain the lead at 10-9 thanks to an RBI single by Liz Caputo to score Megan Schwab.

Hornish would respond right back with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 10-10. Then with two outs and the bases empty, Foltz singled to the left side and Meeks helped her own cause with another single to left field. Whitt then delivered the game winner with a single to center field.
