Lions Push #35 Pepperdine

Feb. 26, 2005

Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's tennis, playing its third match in as many days, saw its toughest test today at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions hosted 35th-ranked Pepperdine and earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots before falling 5-2 Saturday afternoon.

Senior Carla Arguelles earned her second straight win at the top singles spot, defeating 90th-ranked Caroline Raba, the 2004 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

"Carla won two out of her three matches today, and that's a great average," LMU Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.

Sophomore Erin Ivey also got a straight sets singles victory for the Lions, defeating Merve Asimgil 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.

But Pepperdine showed its experience at the other spots and in doubles play, winning in straight sets at spots two through five in singles. The Waves had never won at the LMU Tennis Center.

"Today was definitely a couple of steps in the right direction," Sanchez said. "We are right where we need to be right now. When we face Pepperdine again, we will be a better team."
