Fullerton, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's tennis picked up its first victory of the season Thursday, defeating Cal State Fullerton 4-3 on the road. The match was rescheduled for Thursday after last week's contest was rained out.
"It was a competitive match between two teams that hadn't played in awhile due to the rain," LMU Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said.
The Lions got a boost early, earning the doubles point after victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Serena Fermin and Erin Sanchez defeated the Titans' Inapulat and Dunbar 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. The doubles matches were then tied at one after Carla Arguelles and Patrycia Hubl fell 8-5 at the No. 1 spot. At the deciding No. 3 spot, Erin Ivey and Kimi Kaloi were down 7-3, but posted an impressive comeback to win 10-8 and secure the doubles point for the Lions.
LMU got two straight set wins at the No. 3 and 4 spots in singles. Hubl defeated Carla Rocha 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3, while Kaloi won 6-2, 6-1 over Maily Tran at No. 4.
Erin Ivey picked up the third singles victory for the Lions over Cal State Fullerton's Arias, taking the first set 6-3. Ivey struggled in second, dropping it 6-1, but rallied in the third to secure the match with a 6-3 win.
"We came through today at the difficult moments," Sanchez said, "and that helped us pull out the win."
The win gives the Lions their first victory of the season, and puts Sanchez's record at 395-352, just five shy of the 400-win milestone.
