LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount University Men's Soccer Head Coach Paul Krumpe today announced the members of his incoming 2005 Men's Soccer recruiting class. Joining the Lions in the fall of 2005 will be Jay Singh, Will Freriks, Garrett Maloney, Bo Miller, Alex Proano, Andrew Kristof, and Patrick Sampson.
"Our focus of this recruiting class has been to bring in defenders and players suited to a defensive midfield role," said Krumpe. "When losing three starting defenders including Matt Kovar, the 2004 WCC Defender of the Year, Michael Brewer, and Danny Williams, we felt it was essential to recruit players with the potential ability to fill these roles from day one. We also needed to provide depth at goalkeeper with the graduation of Shaun Kalnasy. I think we have certainly accomplished that goal with this class."
Singh, a 5-8, 165 pound defender from Fremont, Calif., was selected as a 2004 NSCAA High School All-American. He has been a member of the 1987 Region IV team since 2000. In 2002, he was selected for the residency program in Bradenton, Florida for the U.S. U-17 National Team. "Jay is one of the best left backs to come out of California in recent years. He will really be a big part of what we will try to accomplish in 2005," Krumpe said. Singh will graduate from Junipero Serra High School this spring.
Freriks, a 5-7, 160 pound midfielder from Littleton, Colo., headlines a Colorado contingent that continues the Lions' dominance in recruiting the top talent from the Rocky Mountains. "Will is highly regarded as one of the top defensive midfielders in the country. His work rate and ability to connect will immediately pay dividends here at LMU," Krumpe commented.
Rounding out the Lions' bounty of players from Colorado are defenders Maloney and Miller. Krumpe is excited about the addition of the two products out of Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs. "These two young men are very athletic, aggressive, and accomplished players and will immediately challenge for starting spots in our team," he said.
A two time All-State selection, Maloney was teammates with current Lion Nick Blanco, on the Colorado 1986 Boys ODP team that captured the 2004 Region IV and National ODP Championship. "Garrett is a very versatile left sided player who could very well be starting in our first game this fall. He is very mature in his ability to read the game and possesses some great physical attributes," said Krumpe.
Named First Team All-State in 2004, Miller was also a starter on the Colorado 1986 Boys ODP team that captured the 2004 Region IV and National ODP Championship. LMU assistant coach, Brian Irvin has praise for the 6-1, 180 defender. "Bo is a very athletic defender and I think that he will instantly help to replace the physical presence we lose with the graduation of Brewer, Williams and Kovar," Irvin offered.
Rounding out the defenders in the 2005 class are local Southern California products Proano and Kristof. Proano is a 5-9, 170 pound defensive midfielder hailing from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, where he was teammate of current Lion goalkeeper Miguel Benitez. While at Bishop, Proano was a four-year starter and was named All-League three years in a row.
Kristof, a 5-11, 170 pound midfielder/defender from Torrance West High School will rejoin former high school teammate and current Lion Joe Stoakley. "Alex and Andrew are two players with a great deal of potential. They are two of the best players coming out of the South Bay, and this is an area that we continue to actively recruit," said Krumpe.
Replacing Kalnasy will fall onto the shoulders of Sampson , a 6-3, 190 pound goalkeeper from Portland, Ore. Sampson was a First-Team All-State selection as he led Lakeridge High School to the 2004 Oregon State Championship. He was also was named to the Super Y-Leagues National U17 ODP Pool in 2005. "Patrick will immediately push our current goalkeepers for playing time from day one and we look forward to watching him develop into one of the top goalkeepers in the West Coast Conference," stated Krumpe.
"These seven young men make up a very diverse and talented class. They will blend in very well with the style of play and the core group of players we already have in place," concluded Krumpe.
