Long Beach, Calif. - Highlighted by a third place finish in the 200 medley relay and a sixth place finish for Lauren Mathewson in the 100 backstroke, day two of competition at the 2005 Speedo Cup finished with the Lions gaining ground in the standings by passing the University of San Diego for ninth place.
Seeded in the top-eight, the Lions' 200 medley relay team took home a third place finish Friday with a mark of 1:47.6, just about .3 off the school record set last season.
Individually, junior Lauren Mathewson finished sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.46.
Sarah Hamilton finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke, with a time just .5 off the school record in 1:07.53. Morgan Finley (1:08.29) and Angela Samuels (1:08.37) also earned points for the Lions in the 100 breast by finishing 20th and 21st.
Also adding to the Lions' point total Saturday was Liz Magura, who finished 21st in the 400 IM with a time of 4:41.73.
LMU's 800 free relay team finished 9th in 7:50.45.
With 247.5 total points, the Lions advance to ninth place in the standings, now almost 30 points ahead of 10th place San Diego. LMU is just 56.5 points out of its goal of eighth place, and the Lions remain ahead of crosstown rival Pepperdine.
The 19 teams on the women's side will complete competition Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
