Fullerton, Calif. - Serena Fermin and Pavla Mesterova advanced
to the round of 16 in singles play to lead Loyola Marymount women's
tennis in day one of the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tennis
Tournament.
Fermin advanced to the round of 32 after defeating Kristen Wilson of UC
Santa Barbara. She dropped the first set 3-6 but fought back to win
the second and third sets 6-1 and 6-4. She then defeated Leslie Damion
of UCSB 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16.
Mesterova advanced to the round of 32 with a bye and then defeated Gina
Le of host Cal State Fullerton in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Tamara Tanner defeated Chip Dunbar of CSUF 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 advancing to
the round of 32. She then fell to second-seeded Chelsea Glynn of UCSB
6-1, 7-5.
The Lions' Shawnell Russell fell in two sets to Sonya Kumar of Cal
State Northridge 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Russell teamed with Fermin to advance to the round of
16 by defeating Tabatruong/Katayama of Long Beach State 8-6. The
other LMU duo of Mesterova and Tanner also advanced to the round of 16
after defeating Oki/Sakhakorn of UC Riverside 8-2.
The women continue play at Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
