LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 non-conference game to Northwestern this afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Wildcats scored a goal in each half on similar plays to take the first-ever meeting between the schools. LMU returns to WCC action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Mary's at Sullivan Field at 2:00pm.
David Roth almost gave Northwestern the lead in the 18th minute on a lofting shot that was saved on the goal line by the LMU defense. A minute later, Brad North did give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with the first goal of the game. Eric Brin slotted the ball through the LMU defense to North. LMU goalkeeper Miguel Benitez took away the near side of the goal, so North found the far post for the game's first goal.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, and opened the second half with a goal very similar to the first one. Gerardo Alvarez found Alexander Renzi who again slotted the ball through the LMU defense to the attacking Kevin Earnest on the right side. Benitez challenged again, and Earnest took the sharp angle to the far post to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead.
Bobby Burling had a good look late in the second half. Burling headed a ball down to the chest of Joe Stoakley who got the ball back to Burling right in front of the net. His shot was smothered by Northwestern goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal to preserve the Wildcat shutout.
The Lions outshot Northwestern 13-7, but managed just three shots on goal. In his first home appearance, Benitez made one save, while Rosenthal made three saves for Northwestern.
Jimmy Burling led LMU with three shots on the day, while Nick Blanco, Bobby Burling and Matthew Mejia each had a pair of shots. Earnest and John Carlstedt led the Wildcats with two shots each.
LMU falls to 4-5-4 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 8-4-1. The Lions return to conference action on Sunday when they host Saint Mary's at 2:00pm at Sullivan Field.
