San Diego, CA- It was a physical afternoon between USD (6-2-3, 2-2-1 WCC) and Loyola Marymount (4-4-4, 2-2-1 WCC), ending in a 1-1 decision after an intense double-overtime match.
San Diego outshot the Lions 12-5 in the first half, and Loyola Marymount's goalie Robert Flores tallied five saves. However, the half ended 0-0.
In the 52nd minute, LMU junior midfielder Diego Souza found freshman defender Jawaan Delaney on a breakaway sprint. Delaney maneuvered the ball into the penalty box. USD goalie Lance Friesz charged and from 10 yards out, Delaney shot the ball over Friesz and into the net.
USD responded in the 68th minute when senior midfielder Jan Prochazka connected with junior forward Ryan Guy up field. Guy saw sophomore mid-fielder Dustin Guerrero open passing him the ball. Lions goalie Flores charged and Guerrero from 8 yards out took advantage of the open net tying the game 1-1.
Near the end of the period, both teams were down a man as red cards were handed out to a player from each team. The end of regulation came with no change in the score. In the first overtime, San Diego out-shot USD again 3-1 ending still at 1-1. In the second overtime, San Diego had two more shots against the Lions to LMU's zero. The match ended deadlocked at 1-1.
Flores had 9 saves in the match while Friesz had only 2. The Toreros out-shot the Lions 22-11 overall.
The Lions start a four-game homestand this Friday when they host Northwestern in their final non-conference game. Kick-off is at 1:00pm at Sullivan Field.
