INTERNATIONAL RULES of the GAME

May 3, 2004

1. The duration of the game will be four, 10 minute periods. NCAA rule is two, twenty-minute halves.

2. If any game goes into overtime, the overtime period shall last 5 minutes. NCAA rule is a 5 minute overtime period.

3. The international length of the court is 91'10" x 49'2". NCAA rule is 94" x 50"

4. The international three-point line is 20'6". NCAA three-point line is 19'9"

5. The international rule for the shot clock is 24 seconds. NCAA rule is 35 seconds.

6. A backcourt violation (time allotted to get the ball cross half court) is 8 seconds. NCAA rule is 10 seconds.

7. The clock stops after a made FG the last two minutes of the 4th period and OT's. NCAA rule is the clock stops only in the last minute of the 2nd half and OT's.

8. The international rule for player fouls is 5. NCAA rule is 5.

9. Bonus free throws will be rewarded at the 5th foul per period (shoot 2 FT's). NCAA rule is 7th foul per half (one & one) and 10th foul per half (2 FT's).

10. Only 5 players are permitted on the free throw lane (3 defensive and 2 offensive). NCAA rule is six people per lane (4 defensive and 2 offensive).

11. Timeout can only be called by a coach and must be done at the scorer's table. NCAA rule is by any player in the game or the coach from the court.

12. If there is a tie up in possession, a jump ball will be used. NCAA rule is to alternate possessions after the opening tip-off.

13. The international rule is you can touch the ball on or above the cylinder (rim). NCAA rule is you can't touch the ball on or above the cylinder (rim).

14. In international play, they use two referees. NCAA rule is three referees.

  • TIMEOUTS: One 60 second TO in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th periods. Two 60 second TO's in the 4th period. NO CARRYOVER.

    WHO CAN REQUEST ONE: Only a coach or assistant coach may request a charged timeout. Do so by going to the scorer's table by asking clearly for a timeout by making the proper conventional sign. Unused timeouts may not be carried over to the next period or an extra period.

    WHEN THEY ARE PERMITTED:
    ?During dead ball situations when the game clock is stopped.
    ?When a FG is scored against a team that has requested a TO before the FG.
    ?BEFORE free throws. NOT between or after free throws.

    WHEN THEY ARE NOT PERMITTED:
    ? A charged TO shall NOT be granted to the scoring team when the game clock is stopped following a successful FG during the last two minutes of the 4th period or any extra period.

  • SUBSTITUTIONS:
    WHEN THEY ARE PERMITTED:
    ? When the ball becomes dead or the game clock is stopped.
    ? When a FG is scored AGAINST a team that has requested a substitution in the last two minutes of the 4th period or any extra period. If and when the scored upon team substitutes, the scoring team may also substitute at the same time.
    ? BEFORE free throws. Not between or after except in the case of the shooter. If the shooter is substituted for, the opposing team may also substitute ONE player provided the request was made before the ball becomes live for the last or only free throw.
    ? If the referee interrupts the game, substitutions may be made.

    WHEN THEY ARE NOT PERMITTED:
    ? Following a violation by a team NOT in possession of the ball for a throw-in. However, if the team taking the throw-in has made a substitution, then the opposing team may also substitute.

  • FREE THROWS:
    ? Players may not enter the lane until the ball leaves the shooter's hands.
    ? Only five players may occupy the free throw lane at one time (3 defensive and 2 offensive. All other players shall stand behind the three-point line and the free throw line extended.
