Carson, CA (March 28) - The Loyola Marymount University women's tennis team put a tough end to an even tougher stretch as the Lions fell to No. 48 Sacramento State in heartbreaking fashion, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
The Lions, who were playing in their fourth game in five days, played their third ranked team in the last four matches and suffered their third 4-3 setback of the season as they fall to 6-10 on the year.
All six singles matches were finished in straight sets with each team winning three matches. Thus, the match was ultimately decided by the very competitive doubles play. Sacramento State's Margarita Karnavkhova and Marta Gronowicz took the number one doubles point 8-1 over the Lions' Erin Ivey and Tamara Tanner.
The Lions would then take number three double in dramatic fashion, as Jennifer and Robyn Baker earned a 9-8 win to set-up the crucial double point coming down to the number two doubles.
At number two doubles Carala Arguelles and Kimi Kaloi were able to tie the match at 7-7 but fell in the tie-breaker 8-6 to loss the match by a final score of 9-7 to give the doubles point to Sacramento State.
The Lions would then win at number three singles by Patrycia Hubl, at number five singles by Jennifer Baker and number six singles by Erin Ivey. However, the Lions could not pull out the fourth singles match.
The Lions will host Brown at the Home Depot Center on Thursday, April 1 at 1:30 p.m.
