Los Angeles, CA (Mar.26) - The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team dropped the first game of three with WCC rival Gonzaga Friday afternoon at Page Stadium. Starter Will Quaglieri went a strong seven and two-thirds innings picking up nine strikeouts along the way, but received a no decision for his effort.
LMU (14-11-1, 5-2 WCC) found itself locked up in a pitcher's duel between Quaglieri and Gonzaga (9-14, 3-1 WCC) starter Eric Dworkis (3-2) for eight innings. Then in the top of the ninth the Zags batted around and scored five runs to come away with the win. Quaglieri allowed just two runs on a two out two run double to left by Matt Reding over his seven and two-thirds. Reding's double gave the Zags a 2-0 lead and it stayed that way until the fifth.
Clint McGill led off the fifth by doubling down the leftfield line. One out later he would come around to score the Lions' first run when Joe Frazee doubled to left center. Frazee wound up going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. He would move to third when Jonathan Oller reached base on an error and eventually scored on a game tying single to left by Chris Pettit.
The game would stay tied until the top of the ninth when the Zags would load the bases with one out. Marshall Bratton then singled to left to break the tie and make it a 4-2 Gonzaga lead. Two batters later Jeff Culpepper hit a bases clearing three run double to make it a five run lead.
The Lions answered back with a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Frazee sacrifice fly, but that was not enough as the Lions fell 7-3. Gonzaga starter Dworkis went the distance allowing eight hits and three runs. LMU was led offensively by Frazee, McGill who was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Billy Lockin who went 2-for-4 as well.
The loss marked the first time that the Lions were defeated at Page Stadium this season. LMU is now 8-1-1 at Page. LMU saw it's first place lead in the WCC Coast division shrink to a half game over the Zags with the loss.
The teams will finish the three game set Saturday and Sunday. Game times are set for 1pm (PST) both days. Both can be heard on the Lions' Audio Network www.LmuLions.com.
