Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's basketball held San Francisco scoreless for more than the first five minutes of play, taking a lead it would never relinquish as the Lions equaled a program-best 21 wins. LMU's 64-46 finish over San Francisco also extended the school-record winning streak to 12 consecutive victories.
The Lions (21-5, 12-1 WCC) opened the night with a 20-2 run, holding San Francisco (10-16, 3-10 WCC) without a field goal for the game's first seven minutes.
Senior Raelen Self gave the Lions the 15-2 lead with just over 14 minutes left to play in the first when she sank her first three-pointer of the evening. On the Lions' next possession, senior Jasmin Matthews was left open under the basket to extend the advantage to 17-2. Self pushed the lead to 18 when she made a tough lay-up, picked up the foul, and made the free throw with 13:20 left in the first.
LMU rode a 53.6 first half free throw percentage to the 36-19 halftime score.
Senior Adrianne Slaughter kept the momentum going in the second, scoring back-to-back buckets to keep the Lions up by 19 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
The Lions extended their lead to 21 with nine minutes to play when sophomore Bianca Ziemann hit a shot under the basket. Rachael Ziemann followed with a three-pointer to put LMU up 56-32.
Senior Michele Brown hit her first three-point shot of the season to give the Lions the 63-46 advantage with just under two minutes remaining. Freshman Becky Hogue hit her first free throw of the season, and the Lions cruised to the 64-46 victory. In a game where the entire Lions' roster saw playing time, the bench contributed 30 of LMU's 64 points.
Seniors Kate Murray and Self led the Lions with 11 points and four assists each. Slaughter added ten points and three blocks, while Matthews finished with eight points and four steals.
The win was the Lions' 12th straight victory and moved their record in Gersten Pavilion to 11-1. LMU, who has already clinched the No. 1 seeding for next week's West Coast Conference tournament, equaled a program-best 21 wins with tonight's victory.
The Lions will celebrate Senior Saturday this weekend when they host Saint Mary's at Gersten Pavilion. LMU will honor its five seniors in pre-game ceremonies and tip-off the final regular season home game at 2:00 p.m.
