Former LMU Star Named to All-Independent League All-Star Team

Oct. 18, 2004

Durham, North Carolina - Former Loyola Marymount standout Anthony Angel has been named to Baseball America's 2004 All-Independent League All-Star team. Angel, who played for LMU's West Coast Conference Championship squads in 1998, 1999, and 2000 and is now with the Edinburg Roadrunners of the Central Baseball League (CBL), was a first-team selection to the squad comprised of all-stars from independent leagues around the nation.

Angel was named to the team after hitting .308 with 107 hits, 68 runs scored, 20 doubles, six homeruns, and 66 RBI this season. A participant in the CBL's all-star game, he was selected to the All-League team by the media and managers at the completion of the season.

Angel was named NEL Batter of the Week on June 20 after going 14-for-28 (.500) with 10 runs scored and seven RBI. He also added six doubles, a triple, and a homerun for a slugging percentage of .893 on the week.

The second baseman just completed his second season with the Edinburg (TX) Roadrunners, which won the CBL title in 2004. Angel was named MVP of the CBL divisional series.

Originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the 14th round of the 2000 MLB draft, Angel played two seasons with the Astros, making it to Class-A Michigan of the Midwest League in 2001.

While at LMU, Angel was a three-time WCC first-team selection and the 2000 WCC Player of the Year. The Los Angeles, Calif., native is the nephew of LMU Head Coach Frank Cruz.
