Moraga, Calif. - Loyola Marymount's Carla Arguelles advanced to the flight A singles semifinals to lead the Lions at the 2004 Saint Mary's College Invitational this weekend in northern California. Arguelles defeated opponents from Fresno State and Pacific en route to the semifinals.
After a first-round bye, the third-seeded Arguelles faced a round of 16 battle against Fresno State's Courtney Jantz. Arguelles outlasted Jantz 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 6-4 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. There, the Lions' senior defeated Pacific's Natalia Kostenko 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5.
In her semifinals match-up, Arguelles fell to Sacramento State's Klara Peterson 6-1, 6-3.
Arguelles and doubles partner Kimi Kaloi defeated Saint Mary's Aude Lambert and Stef Ordoveza 8-3 in the doubles flight A consolation bracket after falling to Sacramento State's Cecilia Helland and Cristina Rivieccio 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
In singles, Kaloi had advanced to the flight A quarterfinals after defeating Ally Muller (UC Davis) 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16. Kaloi fell in the quarters to fourth-seeded Vana Mrazovic (Pacific) 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Tamara Tanner was the third Lion in the flight A singles bracket, and she dropped two matches to Pacific's Katharina Trumpf (6-3, 6-4) and Sacramento States Cristina Rivieccio (6-2, 6-2).
Tanner teamed with Erin Sanchez to reach the consolation quarterfinals of the flight B doubles bracket where the Lions defeated Nevada's Audrey Bardot and Christine Tilley 8-4. Tanner and Sanchez earned the win after rebounding from an earlier quarterfinal loss to San Jose's Courtney Koenigsfld and Kathy Van (8-6).
In the Lions' other singles action, Diana Vinis reached the quarterfinals of flight B after defeating Kristen Davenport (Nevada) 6-1, 6-3 and Stef Ordoveza (Saint Mary's) 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. She fell to San Francisco's Anna Skogerboe 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-3 in the quarters.
In flight C singles, Sanchez dropped two matches to Santa Clara's Jessie Struk (6-1, 6-0) and UC Davis' Amanda Wise (6-3, 6-2).
Up next for the Lions is the ITA Regional Tournament, this Thursday through Sunday in San Diego.
