Los Angeles, Calif., - Saturday, Apr. 12, 2003 - The Loyola Marymount women's softball team swept San Diego, 4-0 and 6-0, in Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at the LMU Softball Field. Sophomore Danielle Kaminaka blasted her ninth home run of the season in Game 2.
The Lions (20-16 Overall/4-2 PCSC) shutout the Toreros (6-28 Overall/1-5 PCSC) 4-0 in Game 1. With the score tied at 0-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions were ready to get their offensive going. Sophomore RF Tiffany Lawson led off the inning earning a walk on four straight pitches after going down in the count 0-2. Lawson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from LF Lisa Abbott and later scored on a double to left by 2B Casie Phillips. Kaminaka and junior C Trisha Gomes kept things alive with back-to-back singles. Junior DP Sami Strinz drove in LMU's second run of the game with yet another single and that would be all for USD's starting pitcher Gina McFarland.
Anna Russell came on in relief of McFarland with only one out in the inning. The Lions tagged Russell for two more runs before the end of a four run inning. The Toreros had a chance to get things going in the top of the seventh. USD managed to get three hits off of LMU starting pitcher Samantha Lavino, but failed to get any runners home leaving all three stranded on base.
Lavino pitched a complete game shutout improving her record to 6-5 on the season. She allowed only five hits in seven innings pitched and struck out six. McFarland drew the loss, her record falls to 3-10.
The Lion bats kept going in Game 2. Phillips started things off with a two run homer over the center field fence, her sixth of the season. LMU added two more runs in its half of the third pushing the score to 4-0. Kaminaka gave the Lions an extra cushion with her two run home run in the fourth. A six run lead was all Lion pitcher Krystal Kehr needed.
Kehr shutout the Toreros through seven innings, improved her record to 9-6 and threw her seventh complete game of the season. Kehr gave up only two hits and struck out four batters. Erin Harmonson drew the loss for USD. Harmonson's record falls to 3-10 on the year.
The Lions return to action tomorrow, Apr. 13 against San Diego. Per PCSC rules, USD will be the home team in tomorrow's contests. PCSC doubleheader action against the Toreros begins at 12 p.m. at the LMU Softball Field.
