Water Polo Defends Way to 5-2 Victory

March 19, 2003

Los Angeles, CA (March 19) - Thanks to 17 saves from freshman goalie Rachel Riddell, seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount University earned a 5-2 victory over 17th-ranked Princeton University in women's water polo action at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Riddell snagged six saves in the fourth quarter to thwart any come-back bid by the Tigers. The Lions used goals from five different players to improve to 8-7 on the season. Princeton falls to 8-4.

The Lions struck first with a goal from junior Devon Wright just two minutes into the contest. The Tigers would tie the game 40 seconds later when Adele McCarthy-Beauvais scored with 4:30 remaining in the first frame.

LMU would take the 2-1 lead on a goal from Julia Wald with just 38 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Goals from sophomore Jessica Conner, junior Teresa Guidi and junior Jamie Kroeze would give the Lions a 5-1 lead into half. The lead would stand as the Tigers would add just one goal in third period by Jenny Edwards.

The Lions return to action on Thursday against 13th-ranked Indiana at 3:00 p.m. at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
