Just Briefly

The LMU women's team has been on a roll lately, extending its win streak to five after blanking San Francisco and Gonzaga, 7-0. Three of LMU's last five wins have come in 7-0 sweeps of its opponent. The Lions improved their record to 6-6 overall and an impressive 5-1 in the West Coast Conference with the wins.

Next Up

The Lions go into match two of a six-match homestand against Princeton this week. LMU will host the Tigers on Thursday, Mar. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Courts. It is the Lions' second home match this week, they defeated San Francisco, 7-0, on Monday. LMU is looking to add to its current five-match win streak.

She's Baaaaaaaaack

Sophomore Jennifer Baker is back in full force in the Lions' lineup. Baker, a transfer from Arizona State, was sidelined for a couple of weeks battling the flu. Now over the bug, Baker is stronger than ever. Since coming back she is 5-0 improving her overall mark to 15-12. Even more impressive, three of her five wins has come in straight sets.

Tigers' Tidbits

Princeton comes to Southern California with a 7-3 overall record. The Tigers recently suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of the 29th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs. Princeton is 1-3 when playing ranked opponents this season. The Tigers' only win over a top-75 team came in a 4-3 decision over Old Dominion. LMU is 2-3 all-time against Princeton. The Lions and the Tigers met last season, ending 5-2 in favor of LMU.

How 'Bout Hubl

Freshman Patrycia Hubl seems as the though she's fitting into the college tennis game just fine. Since teammate Jennifer Baker has been back in the lineup after fighting the flu for a few weeks, Hubl has moved to play the No.6 singles spot. There she has posted no less than a 5-0 record and improved her overall mark to 16-9. She is the only Lion to hold her losses column in singles play under double-digits. In doubles action she has most frequently teamed up with senior Penka Fileva. The duo has posted a 4-3 record playing the No.1 doubles spot and a perfect 2-0 mark at the No.2 spot. The freshman/senior team is the only Lion duo to own double digit wins with a record of 10-4.

Strong Seniors

Seniors Edit Pakay and Penka Fileva not only provide off the court leadership for their squad, but lately their actions on the court have equalled a thousand words. Pakay and Fileva have combined for an astounding 10-0 record in the last five matches playing at the No.1 and 2 singles spots, respectively. Of those 10 total matches won, nine came in straight sets. Fileva's overall mark of 13-13 pushes her career record to 77-55. She ranks third on LMU's all-time singles win chart.

Pakay Turning Around Play

Senior Edit Pakay, who was struggling during the beginning of dual competition, has turned her play around of late. Pakay has won her last five straight matches at the No.1 singles spot. Not only has she just won them though, she has won all five in straight sets. She owns the most singles wins of any Lion with an 20-14 overall record. In doubles play she has teamed up with freshman Diana Vinis. Pakay and Vinis have posted a perfect 4-0 record at the No.2 doubles spot. The team owns an overall mark of 6-3.

Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

After dropping their first West Coast Conference match, 5-2, to the University of San Diego the Lions have been rolling through the rest of the WCC. A weekend in the Bay Area started the current streak with wins over Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Portland, in neutral territory. Most recently, home wins over Gonzaga and San Francisco have given the Lions an impressive 5-1 mark in league play. With just one conference match left in the regular season, Pepperdine, LMU hopes to continue its momentum in league play through to the conference tournament in April.

LMU Head Coach

Jamie Sanchez enters his 28th season as the head coach of the Lions program at LMU. Last season Sanchez led the Lions to a 14-11 overall record, a 4-1 WCC mark and the programs first ever WCC Championship title. The program, headed up by Sanchez since its inception in 1976, holds a mark of 366-320. Sanchez earned his second straight West Coast Conference Coach of the Year award last season. He coached four All-WCC singles selections and two doubles team awardees in 2002.
