Los Angeles, Calif., - Friday, Feb.14, 2003 - The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team suffered a 49-57 loss at the hands of the Santa Clara Broncos on Friday night in Gersten Pavilion. Junior Adrianne Slaughter earned her seventh double-double of the year with a 21-point, 12-rebound performance.
The Broncos (16-6 Overall/7-2 WCC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the Lions in the first two minutes of the game. Adrianne Slaughter put in LMU's (11-2 Overall/3-7 WCC) first points of the game off an assist from Claudine Auld. Julie Butler would extend SCU's lead to 11-2 with a lay-up.
The Lions answered Butler's score by going on a 16-0 run and taking over the lead 18-11. Tammy Annas would end the Broncos scoring drought with a lay-up on an in-bounds play coming out of a media timeout. SCU regained the lead, 24-23, on a basket by Kayla Huss. The Broncos took a 29-25 lead into the lockerroom.
SCU came out of the break extending its lead to 10 points three times within the first 10 minutes of the final period. Slaughter managed to cut the Broncos advantage to just four points, 45-41, with a put back off a missed free-throw attempt by Michele Brown.
Unfortunately for the Lions, that would be as close as they could come. Santa Clara held on for the 57-49 win.
Slaughter led all scorers and rebounders with her 21 points and 12 boards; she was 9-for-15 from the floor. Auld and Brown followed with six points each. Jenni Smith, Jackie Woods and Mary Turner contributed four points apiece, while Bianca Ziemann and Jasmin Matthews each chipped in two.
Santa Clara had four athletes score in double figures. Quinn Thomas and Huss tied for the squad lead with 12 points. Annas and Butler finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
LMU rounds out it regular season home schedule on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Lions host the University of San Diego at 12:30 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on Fox Sports Net West.
