San Diego, CA (Feb. 9) - The Loyola Marymount University women's water polo team earned second place in the UC San Diego Arena Invitational as they split a pair of games in the final day on Sunday.

The sixth-ranked Lions fell to fourth-ranked Long Beach State 6-5 but rallied to win against seventh-ranked San Diego State, 5-4. Long Beach State, who lost to San Diego State, 6-5, won the tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. The Lions, 49ers and Aztecs all won both games on Saturday to advance to the championship round robin. Long Beach State won the tournament by virtue of the number of goals scored, as the three-team went 1-1 against each other.

In the first game of the day for the Lions, they fell down early in the first quarter thanks to a five-goal outburst by the 49ers. Each team added a goal in the second quarter to make the score 6-3 at the break. The Lions mounted a rally to cut the lead to one with a goal in the third and fourth quarters. Long Beach State, however, would hold on.

Junior college transfer Neisha Hoagland scored two goals for the Lions.

The Lions would rebound with a 6-5 win over the Aztecs. Once against they fell behind, trailing 4-2 at the half. The Lions, would then score three unanswered goals to earn the win. Five players scored for the Lions.

Junior Teresa Guidi was named to the All-Tournament team.
