No. 15 Loyola Marymount (25-6, 10-4 WCC) has received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in ten years, the NCAA announced Sunday evening on ESPNews. LMU will open first round action against Cal State Northridge (16-12) on Friday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. in USC's Lyon Center.

The 64-team tournament consists of 31 automatic bids (conference champions) and 33 at-large invitations. The teams are assigned to 16 sites, with 16 teams receiving seeds.

For the first time in West Coast Conference history, six of the conference's eight teams received tournament bids. The WCC leads all conferences, placing 75 percent of its teams in the tournament. "I think all six WCC teams deserved to be in the tournament, as we've been battling each other all season," senior co-captain Kealani Kimball said. "It really shows how strong our conference is, and I think each WCC team will do very well in the tournament after being challenged all season. We couldn't ask for a better conference to play in; we love playing in a tough conference because we can get better with every match."

LMU and Cal State Northridge will square off in the first round, as will top-seed Southern California (29-0) and New Hampshire (23-11). The winner of each match-up will meet for the second round contest, also played at USC on Saturday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the Lyon Center.

"We are very excited about beginning the playoffs," said Head Coach Steve Stratos. "Our players have had a good year, and the opportunity to play close to home so our fans can come see us play is great. We are really looking forward to getting started."

No. 15 LMU Places Two on All-WCC Team
No. 15 Loyola Marymount's Kealani Kimball and Kelli Nerison were selected to the All-West Coast Conference first team, WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran announced on November 25th. Tiana Newsome and Nicole Oehlman received honorable mention recognition as well. Kimball is now a three-time All-WCC first team selection, receiving the nod in 2001 and 2002. The outside hitter completed WCC play ranking in the conference's top ten in three categories: digs (fourth- 3.67), kills (ninth- 3.95), and points (ninth- 4.53). Kimball put up double-double numbers in twelve of the fourteen conference matches, including the final nine contests. Kimball received the WCC's Player of the Week honors on October 27, after leading LMU to victories over then-No. 12 Santa Clara then-No. 16 San Diego.

Nerison receives her first All-WCC selection after a breakthrough season with the Lions. The junior, who appeared in just seven matches last season, finished WCC play leading the conference in hitting percentage (.394) and blocks (1.74). She also ranked 16th in kills and 12th in points. The middle blocker was the WCC's Player of the Month in October, playing consistent enough to earn the honor without ever receiving a Player of the Week selection. Overall in October, Nerison recorded double-digit kills and seven or more blocks in seven of LMU's eight matches, while never hitting below .286. She totaled 110 kills and 64 blocks in the Lions' eight matches. At the end of the regular season, Nerison ranked 21st in the nation in hitting percentage and 23rd in blocks per game.

LMU in National Rankings
LMU has climbed in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll nine times throughout the season. This week, the Lions (25-6, 10-4 WCC) retain their No. 15 ranking after finishing third in a tough West Coast Conference. The Lions peaked at the 13th spot in the October 27th poll, following the back-to-back top-20 wins against Santa Clara and San Diego. The WCC keeps three teams in the top 20 again this week, with Pepperdine and Santa Clara holding at the No. 4 and No. 13 spots, respectively. At 15th, LMU rounds out the WCC selections. San Francisco is still receiving votes in the poll, after finishing fourth in the WCC. Following a six-match skid to end the season, San Diego was not listed among point-winners for the second straight week. The September 29th poll marked the first time in WCC history that five WCC teams were ranked in the top 25. The WCC tied the Pac-10 with five teams ranked in the top 25 that week. No other conference had more than three of its teams ranked. LMU has ranked as high as sixth in the national poll, earning that spot in 1996. The 1996 squad posted a 26-3/14-0 WCC record, and advanced to the NCAA Pacific Regional Semifinal. On November 15th, the current LMU squad broke the mark set by the 1996 team for best home record (13-1) when they beat Portland to finish 14-1 at home. The 2003 squad's 25 wins are the most victories posted since the 1996 team posted 26 victories.

Kelli Nerison was selected as the WCC's top volleyball athlete for her play during October, the conference announced on November 5th.
