Final Stats
Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 15) - Thanks to a late 13-3 run in the final five minutes, the Loyola Marymount University men's basketball team went on to defeat Ratiopharm Ulm from Germany, 84-74, in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion.
With the game tied at 62-62 with 5:10 remaining in the game, the Lions used a 13-3 run over the course of three minutes to take a 75-65 lead and hang tough the rest of the way for the 10-point win. The Lions were led by seniors Keith Kincade and Sherman Gay with 21 and sophomore Wes Wardrop with 16 points. Wardrop added a game-high eight assists in 34 minutes as the Lions go unbeaten in exhibition play.
Ratiopharm Ulm took its first lead of the game with a three-pointer by Kai-Uwe Kranz with 11:15 remaining in the second half to make the score 50-49. Christian Grosse extended the lead at 9:33 with a three-point play making it 53-49. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes.
Ulm was led by Ed Williams with 20 points and Maksym Shtein with 14. The Lions finished outrebounding Ulm 37-17 with sophomore Chris Ayer leading the team with nine while adding 10 points. In addition to his points, Gay added seven rebounds and four steals.
LMU started to make its move for the win with a 7-0 run to retake the lead with 6:23 remaining when Wardrop hit a three-pointer. The run started after a technical foul by Ed Williams and Wardrop hitting both free throws. Gay then knocked in a lay-up to make the score 62-59. Kranz hit another NBA-type three-pointer to tie the score with 5:10 remaining at 62-62.
Freshman Damian Martin gave the Lions the lead with for good and started the Lions game-ending run with 4:55 remaining on a lay-up to make it 64-62. Capping the run for the Lions was Kincade on an offensive rebound and a putback to make and a pair of free throws by Gay to extend the lead to 10.
The Lions got off to a fast start, streaking to a 20-4 lead with 13:15 remaining on a lay-up by Wardrop. Ratiopharm Ulm answered by going on a 18-4 run of their own to cut the score to 24-22 with 8:35 remaining on a jumper by Heizer. Kincade snapped the run with a jumper with 6:42 remaining. A fast break lay-up by Kincade and a jumper by Williams in the final 30 seconds of the half gave LMU a 34-27 lead at the break.
LMU will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 21 when they host UC Riverside at Gersten Pavilion at 7:05 p.m.
