Carson, Calif. - After defeating opponents from UC Santa Barbara, the University of Arizona, UC Riverside, and Cal Poly, several LMU men's tennis players will move on to the main draw of the ITA Region 8 South Championships. Junior Beau Berglund won two qualifying matches Wednesday at the tournament, held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Berglund joins sophomore Mike Wojnarowicz and freshman Nico Terrien in the singles main draw which will begin on Thursday.
Berglund defeated Travis Crawford of Cal Poly 6-4, 6-4 and Tim Mulane of Arizona 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 to earn the right to advance to the main draw. "Beau just wouldn't say die today," head coach Nik DeVore said. "He was down 5-2 in the second set, but clawed his way back to ultimately win 10-8 in a third set super-tiebreaker."
Berglund will now face No. 9 seed Tom Lloyd of Arizona in the first round of the main draw Thursday morning.
In the first round of the doubles qualifier, Wojnarowicz and freshman Matt Phillips defeated Michael Frick and Chris Wetzig of UC Santa Barbara 8-1. The duo went on to beat Mulane and Zach Bromberg 8-4 and will advance to the doubles main draw.
Phillips also defeated Jeremy Owens of UC Riverside 8-5 in the singles round of 64, before dropping a close match to Nick Brotman of UC Santa Barbara 7-6, 6-2.
Sophomore Carlos Malet, who had a bye in the round of 64, fell in three sets to Nathan Fuller of San Francisco 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 in the round of 32.
In the round of 64, LMU sophomore Michael Chan fell to Peter Surapol of UC Irvine 8-5, and freshman Linas Cicenas dropped his match to Mike Coelhe of San Diego State 8-4.
Chan and Malet teamed up in doubles and dropped an 8-3 decision to Surapol and Eric Yandoc in the first round.
Play at the ITA Region 8 South Championships continues through Sunday.
