Lion Swim Team Gets Nipped by CSUN

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount swim team won four events during its dual with Cal State Northridge, but fell to the Matadors 121.5-78.5 today at the Burns Aquatics Complex. Breanne Melconian, Bayley Diamond, Jenna Cruzat and Krista Zabor all won individual events as the Lions dropped to 0-7 on the season.

In the first individual event of the dual, Melconian won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:05.69, ahead of CSUN's Claudette Viray (11:22.68).

Trailing by 22 points, LMU dominated the 50-yard freestyle scoring a meet-high 17.5 points, sweeping the top three spots and tying for the fourth. Diamond paced the Lions swimming a 25.83, followed by Melissa Bommarito (26.71) and Marisa Garcia (27.48). Lion freshman Maureen Sheehan tied Kristina Estrada of CSUN in 27.49. With the impressive showing, LMU closed the gap to just six points, but couldn't get any closer at the Matadors won five of the final seven events.

Cruzat was able to win the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.10) for LMU, while Zabor claimed the 200-yard breaststroke crown (2:34.23).

The Lions return to action on Saturday when they travel to Malibu to take on Pepperdine and San Diego. The duals begin at 11 a.m.
