Los Angles, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount University men's tennis team won its 15th consecutive home match under head coach Nik DeVore, as the Lions began the 2003 season with a 5-2 victory over the NAIA's sixth ranked team, Azusa Pacific.
The Lions took five of the six individual matches, but dropped the doubles point 2-1.
LMU senior Leopold Graeubig battled back to beat Boris Bakalov 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Fellow seniors Anthony Evrard and Johannes Asuja also earned victories. Evrard downed Adam Davidson 6-3, 6-4, while Asuja easily handled Cougar freshman Thomas Jelsma (6-2, 6-1).
Lion freshman Michael Wojnarowicz continued his impressive rookie campaign with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cole Billings, while Carlos Malet-Faura breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Justin Green.
Evrard and freshman Robert Kennedy won LMU's lone doubles match, downing Azusa Pacific's Billings and Green.
The Lions will next be in action when they host BYU on Thursday at 1:30.
