Sept. 22, 2002

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif., - Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 - The 17th-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's soccer team pulled off a 2-0 upset over No.3 UCLA to remain undefeated on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field in front of a crowd of 1,500. Lion junior Yugi Teranishi scored his first career goal to lift LMU to its sixth win of the year.

UCLA (4-1-0 Overall) held a slight 5-2 advantage in shots going into the half. Lion goalkeeper Adam Sthay and Bruins keeper Zach Wells each made two saves in the first period, neither allowed a goal keeping the game tied at 0-0 at the break.

The Lions (6-0-2 Overall) kept Wells busy in the second half taking eight shots to the Bruins four. Wells made five saves in the second period, but it was not enough. In the 52nd minute (52:05) Teranishi took a pass from senior Andres Murriagui and beat Wells for the score. The goal was Teranishi's first of the year and of his career as a Lion.

LMU's defense carefully guarded the Lions' one goal advantage until late in the game when Teranishi was pulled down from behind on a breakaway creating a penalty kick attempt for LMU. Junior Michael Erush would beat Wells on the penalty kick and push the score to a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The Lions did not let up and kept peppering the Bruins defense with shots in the waning minutes including a final attempt by Teranishi for his second goal of the game with one second left on the clock. That shot was collected safely by Bruins keeper Wells, one of his seven saves in the game. Sophomore Matt Kovar led the Lions with three shots on goal in the contest.

Lions' keeper Sthay earned his third shutout of the year as he kept the Bruins scoreless through 90 minutes. The win marks LMU's second consecutive regular-season victory over UCLA.

The Lions go on the road next weekend to face Sacramento State on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.
