PORTLAND -- An offensive outburst led Portland (24-28/16-12) to an 18-10 West Coast Conference win over Loyola Marymount (20-34/13-15). Portland, chasing San Diego for the West Division title, needs a sweep of LMU to win the pennant.
The Pilots tied a school record with five homers, and added four doubles. Freshman outfielder Trevor Hahn extended his school-record hitting streak to 26 games with a pair of singles and Matt Allen and Brock Griffin each drove in four runs Friday.
Pilot starter Steve Chamberlain scuffled through six innings to get the win (8-2), but surrendered 10 hits and eight runs. Chamberlain was the beneficiary of a 21-hit Pilot offensive attack, and left the game with a 15-7 lead after Tommy Perez hit a two-run homer for LMU in the seventh. It was Perez' 10th of the season and the 40th of his career, five shy of the all-time mark at LMU.
Perez finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.
After Chamberlain spotted the Lions a two-run lead in the second, the Pilots answered with a seven-run outburst, including a two-run double from Eric Hull and a two-run homer from Allen. Griffin, who also drove in four runs with three hits, hit a two-out solo homer for the Pilots in the third.
Kory Casto pushed the Pilot lead to 9-2 with a towering homer in the fourth - his team-leading 10th of the year - then Allen and Travis Hanson hit consecutive doubles. Matt Hollod's single scored Hanson, giving Portland an 11-2 lead.
LMU used three straight hits from Billy Lockin, Joe Frazee and Perez, and a Jonathan Higashi sacrifice fly to close within 11-5. Frazee was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and freshman Carl Stoeber was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
However, Allen and Griffin were responsible for four more Pilot runs in the sixth to increase the lead. After Casto doubled to lead off the sixth, Allen hit a laser to the parking lot behind left field. Hanson and pinch-hitter Jared Mora walked, and Griffin hit a two-run single up the middle.
Now leading 15-7, Chamberlain allowed four straight hits to open the seventh and was lifted for reliever Justin Ballweber, who got three straight outs to get out of the inning.
In the Pilot seventh, Hanson and Hollod hit RBI singles, and Griffin added a sacrifice fly to get the three runs back, but LMU nicked Ballweber for two runs in the eighth. Eric Hull retired the final five LMU batters after replacing Ballweber with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth.
Vincent Cordova went just 2.2 innings for LMU, dropping to 8-4 after allowing eight runs and nine hits.
The teams will play game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
