Final Stats
Los Angeles, CA (April 30, 2002) - Despite 19 hits, the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) baseball team was defeated by Long Beach State 19-9 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Page Stadium.
Long Beach State took advantage of the Lions' pitching with 19 runs on 20 hits, including a 11-run third inning that blew the game open. The 49ers improve to 27-15 on the season and snap a three-game losing in the process. The Lions managed 19 hits themselves but played catch up the entire game to fall to 17-28 on the year.
The 49ers went up 2-0 in the second inning on Chris Wright's double that scored Paul McAnulty and Tim Hutting. The inning was a jump-start for the 49ers' attack, who would break the game open in the third inning. They would bring 15 hitters to the plate in the inning, earning 11 runs on seven hits. After going three-up, three-down in the first inning, Long Beach State would score in every inning except the ninth and have a hit in every inning after the first.
The Lions managed an offense attack themselves against the 14th-ranked pitching staff in the country. LMU scored nine runs on the 19 hits, the most given up by Long Beach State this season. Senior Kris Zacuto did a lot of the damage with one of his best games this season, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and a triple. The three doubles is a single-game high for Zacuto and moves him into second place all-time with 65 career doubles, replacing Anthony Napolitano (1991-94). He has 19 on the 2002 season.
Take away the top of the third inning and the Lions out-performed the 49ers 9-8. Sophomore Joshua Whitesell was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, freshman Christian Campos was 3-for-5 with his first career triple, and freshman Joe Frazee was 2-for-6 with an RBI.
The Lions would actually score in every inning after the second inning and the nine runs was the third most allowed by Long Beach State this season.
LMU will play in its final homestand of the season when San Diego travels to Page Stadium for a three-game series that starts Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m..
