Los Angeles, CA (April 28, 2002) - Loyola Marymount University (LMU) was held to just seven hits as Santa Clara cruised to a 17-1 win at Page Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (20-25, 10-10) scored a pair of runs in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and then broke the game open with an eight-run seventh. The Lions (17-27, 10-10) managed just seven hits on Santa Clara starter John Redmond. The left-hander improved to 5-5 on the season, allowing just one run in eight innings of work.
In the second inning Broncos catcher Jim Wallace hit his 10th home run of the season, third of the week. Wallace added three doubles and 11 RBI, including two on his homer in the second inning.
That was all Redmond needed as he worked out of two-bases loaded jams, one in the second and one in the sixth. The Lions top of the order of sophomore Billy Lockin, sophomore Jonathan Higashi and senior Tommy Perez went 0-for-9 on the day.
In the Broncos' third inning Joey Gomes hit double to score Ryan Chiarelli and AJ LaBarbera to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead. The double was Gomes' 25th of the season, tying the Santa Clara single season record. Gomes would score on Jack Headley's double for the 5-0 lead.
After the four-run fifth gave the Broncos the 8-0 lead they would send 14 hitters to the plate in the seventh inning. The first eight of the inning scored to put the game away.
The Lions finally got to Wallace when Perez walked, the only runner of the Lions' top three in the line-up. He would score on Joshua Whitesell's ground ball.
Grant Feichtmeir closed out the ninth for Santa Clara, getting the Lions out in order.
The Lions will face Long Beach State on Tuesday at Page Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
