No. 6 Women's Water Polo Streak Snapped

March 28, 2002

Los Angeles, CA - The 6th-ranked Loyola Marymount University (LMU) women's water polo team's seven-game season winning streak was broken on Wednesday as the 5th-ranked San Jose State Spartans defeated the Lions 7-5 at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center. The defeat also marks the first home loss for the Lions since the completion of the Burns Aquatics Center pool in 1999.

The Lions drew the first score of the game as Lucy Windes was the only player in the pool to put a goal on the board in the opening quarter to put the Lions up 1-0. The Spartans came back to outscore the Lions 3-1 in the second with goals scored by Neva West and Erin Kelly who put a pair of goals in the cage. LMU's only second-quarter goal came from Teresa Guidi. SJSU closed out the half with a 3-2 lead.

LMU tied the game in the third with Windes adding her second tally to the match. The Spartans answered back with Jessamyn Grewal scoring twice in the period. LMU's Julia Wald added her only goal of the match to keep the Lions in the 5-4 game.

In the fourth quarter the Spartans pulled away outscoring the Lions 2-1 to take the win. SJSU's goals were scored by Christine Welsh and Allison Kurvers. LMU's final goal of the game was scored by Windes as the Lions fell 7-5.

Devon Courtney defended the Lions' cage collecting five saves while Nichole Lipman defended the Spartans' territory with six saves of her own,

Next the Lions take to the road as they head to Northern California. They will begin their road trip with a stop at California on Thursday April 4 at 7:00 p.m.
