No. 3 Trojans Down No. 8 Lions in Season Opener

Los Angeles, CA - The No. 8 Loyola Marymount University (LMU) women's water polo team opened up their 2002 season to the third-ranked USC Trojans on Saturday where the Lions were defeated 10-5 in non-conference action.

Both teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, but the Trojans went on a 4-1 run in the second to take the halftime break with the 6-3 lead. LMU was only able to score two goals in the second half, compared to the Trojans who scored four more times.

LMU's all-time leading scorer, Lucy Windes, opened up her senior season with a hat trick against the Trojans. Teresa Guidi and Meredith Bellotti were both successful with their single goals in the game as well. Lions goalie, senior Devon Courtney, collected five saves to start the season for the Lions.

The Trojans were led by Sofia Konoukh and Katrin Dierolf who both scored thir own hat trick, followed by Aniko Pelle with two goals, and Nina Wengst and Shelli Linza, both contributing their single goals. Their goalie, Courtney Lee, recorded three saves on the match.

The Lions will continue their quest of defending their WWPA Conference Title next weekend when they travel to the Border City of San Diego to appear in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
