Men's Water Polo

Water Polo Coach Featured on Chat Session

Nov. 6, 2002

LIONSLIVE

Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 6, 2002) -- Loyola Marymount University men's water polo Head Coach John Loughran will be the featured guest on a LionsLive chat session held Monday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. (PT). Loughran will be the first coach featured on the interactive chat session on LionsLive, hosted by ESPN.com's Campus Chats.

In five previous seasons at the helm of the men's water program at Loyola Marymount University, Loughran has achieved unparalleled success. As he enters his sixth season overseeing all three aquatic sports at LMU (men's and women's water polo and women's swimming), Loughran has built a program that continues to gain national exposure.

In 2001, his men's water polo team won its first-ever Western Water Polo Association championship. They finished the season 15-14, earning a bid to the 2001 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship. With a third place finish and a 14-6 win over UMass, Loughran has the water polo programs at LMU among the nation's elite. By doing so, he has won three straight Coach of the Year honors by the WWPA, two in women's water polo and one in men's. In addition, he was instrumental in bringing the 2002 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship to LMU's Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in December.

He has posted an overall record of 91-78 (.539) for the men's team in five-plus seasons, ranking him as the program's all-time winningest coach. He has also earned a record of 89-55 (.618) with the women's water polo program, leading them to back-to-back WWPA championships and two consecutive appearances to the NCAA Championships.

The 2002 Lions' squad continues to bring national attention to the program. LMU is ranked seventh nationally, its highest in program history. At 12-13 entering the final month of the season, the Lions are in contention to play in their second straight NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship, this one in their own pool. The Lions have earned impressive wins, including victories over sixth-ranked Pepperdine, fifth-ranked Pacific and ninth-ranked Long Beach State, the first wins over those programs in school history.

While Loughran will not be stopping by until 5 p.m. PT on Monday, feel free to send in your questions now and we will save them for his arrival. Go to LionsLive to submit you question.
