Final Stats
Moraga, Calif. - Loyola Marymount's top-seeded Edit Pakay advanced to the finals of the Saint Mary's College Women's Tennis ITA Regional this weekend before falling to Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State 6-4 and 6-0 in the championship match.
The singles consolation bracket saw Noelle Lee of San Jose State and Jennifer Baker of Loyola Marymount advance to the finals. Lee defeated Casey Knutson, 7-5 and 6-2 to advance and Baker defeated Amanda Sanchez 5-7, 6-3 and 7-5. The consolation finals match was not played because of single day play restrictions. Both athletes had already played two singles matches on Sunday.
Pakay posted a 5-1 record during the weekend with victories over Andy Muller (UCD), Brooke Borisoff (CAL), Courtney Jantz (FSU), Carla Arguelles (CAL) and Roberta Fessenko (SAC). Pakay dropped just one set during her march to the finals.
After losing to California's Jessica Shu, Baker went on to post victories over Cherie Pettersson (UNR), Ashley Lehman (UCD) and Sanchez. Baker lost just one set following her opening round setback.
In doubles action, Pakay teamed with Penka Fileva to defeat Lisanne Elfring and Kathryn Meister of Saint Mary's, along with San Jose State's team of Kathy Van and Coral Silverstone before falling to Janelle Kaloi and Christine Limbers of Santa Clara.
The Lions will next be in action when they travel to the ITA Regional Tournament in San Diego, Calif. The tourney will begin on Thursday.
