SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (March 2, 2001)- Loyola Marymount, playing in only its
second doubleheader of the season, took it the distance in splitting a pair
of games, 11-11 in eleven innings and 5-3 in the nightcap to Cal Poly on
Friday night is San Luis Obispo.
In game one., LMU jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. Five
different Lions had an RBI in the first frame, knocking out starter Jared
Blasdell after only one inning. Jeff Walker’s two-run
homer in the fourth gave LMU a 9-0 lead. He finished the game 2-for-3 with
3 RBI.
The Mustangs came back, scoring in five straight innings, starting
with the fifth. Freshman third baseman Kyle Wilson (Santa Maria, CA) had
six RBI, including his first collegiate home run. The Mustangs tied the
game in the bottom of the ninth, when catcher Scott Sheldon (Santa
Maria, CA) tripled home two runs with two outs.
After a scoreless tenth, Robert Hirsh coaxed a bases-loaded walk from
loser Kevin Correia, who is now 1-1 on the year. Freshman Joshua Whitesell
pitched 3.1 innings of relief for the win. He is now 3-1.
In the nightcap, Cal Poly starter Brian Haskell pitched seven innings,
allowing only three runs, to pick up his first win of the year against no
losses. Quinn
McGinnis pitched a scoreless final two innings for his second save of the
year. Joshua Meucke was credited with the loss. He is now 1-2.
The Mustangs didn’t take the lead in the second game until the seventh
inning, scoring twice on fielder’s choices.
The Lions move to 10-8 on the season, while Cal Poly is 8-4. Game three is
scheduled for tomorrow, weather permitting, at 5 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
