LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 10, 2001) – The Loyola Marymount University men’s tennis team defeated the University of Portland 4-3 in a West Coast Conference dual match on Saturday afternoon to move them into third place in the conference standings.
The Lions (3-6) and Pilots split the singles play, each winning three matches. The Lions won the doubles point, which included two matches going 9-7. The Lions won the number one singles behind the team of Carsten Bitschkus and Leopold Graeubig, 8-2 as they defeated the team of Lars Anderson and Matt Baer.
The number two and three double matches were the best of the day, as Portland’s number two doubles Jeff Nunnenkamp and Quinn Borchard defeated Johannes Asuja and Beau Berglund 9-7. With an indentical 9-7 score, the Lions earned the doubles point with Ryan Gerstner and Iman Nilipour defeating Nick Tostenrude and Peter Malacek in number three singles.
Both Graeubig and Bitschkus won their singles matches, with Graeubig winning his number one singles match 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Portland’s Malacek. Bitschkus won number two singles 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 over Anderson.
Portland would take the number three singles and the final two at the number five and six singles. The deciding point for LMU cam in number four singles in another three-set match. Asuja would drop the first set 2-6 but would rebound for the 6-2, 6-1 win over Portland’s Baer.
