LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 9)--The Loyola Marymount University baseball team earned their seventh consecutive win at George Page Stadium, with a 9-5 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon.
The Lions scored nine runs on 11 hits to improve to 6-1 on the season, using six pitchers to hold the Toros to five runs on seven hits. LMU will take on Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday, February 11 at 1 p.m.
Jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead after two innings, the Lions never trailed in the contest as freshman Joshua Whitesell came on in the fourth inning and pitched two and one-third innings of relief to earn the win, his second of the season. Whitesell, who is in his first season out of Rialto High School, has not allowed a run in seven and two-thirds innings of work. He has appeared in five games this 2001 season, striking out seven and walking only two.
The Lions extended their three-run lead with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to build an 8-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. Senior David Maffei's three-run homer in the fifth highlighted the offensive output. The leftfielder finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Other offensive output for the Lions came from catcher Kris Zacuto, as the preseason All-American candidate finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior shortstop Moon Cordero also finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Of the Lions nine runs, eight were earned by an RBI.
Dominguez Hills scored two in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-3. Marion Mauch's pinch hit single scored Zacuto in the seventh to earn the Lions ninth run. The Toros added a pair in the eighth for the games final scoring. Lefty Stephen Ressa earned the loss for CSDH.
