Los Angeles, Calif., - Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount womens basketball team rolled to a 60-37 win over Gonzaga in front of 365 in attendance Friday night in Gersten Pavilion. Three Lions scored in double digits while junior guard Bryn Britton recorded her second career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lions, who improved to 17-7 overall and 8-3 in West Coast Conference action, roared to an 11-0 lead to start the game. Gonzaga (5-19 Overall/0-11 WCC) was scoreless during the first 10 minutes of play. GU's Carmel Lampson put the Zags on the board with a three-pointer at the 10:49 mark of the first half. LMU then went on a 17-2 run to extend the deficit to 28-5 through the next six minutes of play. The Bulldogs rallied nicely though going on a 15-2 run and cutting the lead to just 10 points (30-20) at the half.
It was deja vu for the Bulldogs to start the second half as they managed just eight points through the first 18 minutes of the second half. Gonzaga's Jessica Malone stepped up in the second half scoring the Bulldogs last 13 points. She finished with 22 of Gonzaga's 37 total points.
Britton, who was honored before the game along with teammate Taryn Reynolds for hitting a milestone 1,000 career points, finished second among the Lions in scoring. Leading the offense for LMU was freshman Jasmin Matthews. Matthews hit a career-high 14 points and also collected a career-high 2 assists. Sophomore Kate Murray followed with 12 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Freshman center Adrianne Slaughter chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 4 blocks. Reynolds had seven points and matched her career rebounds total with 10.
The Lions return to action tomorrow Feb. 17 when they host the University of Portland in their final home game of the 2000-01 season. Tipoff for the Lions and the Pilots is 7 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.
