Up Next
The Lions bring their six-game winning streak back to Sullivan Field to host Sacramento State on Friday at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday they travel to Northridge where they face the CSUN Matadors at 7:00 p.m.
Golden Eagle Echoes
CSLA came out with the first goal of the game for the early 1-0 lead. Murriagui came back for the Lions in the 16th minute of the game to score his first goal on the afternoon. Murriagui scored again at the 35:03 minute mark on the game, taking the ball from Claudio Basaez's corner kick. Not more than three minutes passed before Murriagui scored his third goal on the game, assisted by Julian Gaitan and Arturo Torres. His final goal came at 41:55 on the game clock, assisted by Derick Stickel and Torres. The Lions went into halftime leading 4-1. Murriagui set the school mark with four goals in the first half, held previously by Eric Hill who scored three against Occidental in 1990. He tied the mark for goals in a game (4) and points in a game (8) held by Torres, who set it against Denver in 1999. Gaitan was the last Lion to score on the afternoon with his shot in the 53rd minute, assisted by Jeff Kovar. Beltran tried to get CSLA back into the game with his second goal on the game, an unassisted indirect free kick in the 62nd minute of the game.
GOAL!!! The Lions Defeat the No. 11 Bruins
A 29th-minute goal by Loyola Marymount forward Arturo Torres stood as the deciding goal as Loyola Marymount upset the 11th-ranked UCLA men's soccer team 1-0, at UCLA's Frank W. Marshall Field. The play started when Kevin Novak fed Murriagui with a pass down the right flank. Murriagui crossed it to a streaking Torres in the box, and Torres fired a shot that beat UCLA keeper, Zach Wells. Torres nearly scored again in the 69th minute after Bruin forward Cliff McKinley was yellow-carded for a hand ball in the box, but Torres' ensuing penalty kick hit the right post. The Lions increased their win-streak to six with the victory over the Bruins.
Player Recognition: Murriagui and Torres
For the second-straight week the West Coast Conference has selected a Lion as the WCC Player of the Week Andres Murriagui. Just last week Arturo Torres was garnered the same conference honors, along with being selected as the Soccer America National Player of the Week. Murriagui set a new men's soccer record with his four goals in the first half of the 5-2 defeat of Cal State LA. He also assisted Torres on the game-winner against UCLA on Sunday. Torres is the all-time men's soccer leader in goals (33), assists (17) and points (83).
Hornets Notes
Sacramento State is coming off of back-to-back defeats as they fell 1-0 to Gonzaga on Friday, then dropped a 3-2 double overtime game to Oregon State. Against Gonzaga, both teams played evenly throughout the contest as Hornet senior goalkeeper Leo Marin (four saves) and Gonzaga's Mike McCarthy (two saves) kept the game at a standstill until Faridnia found the net on a penalty kick in the first overtime period. Sacramento State dropped to 1-3-1 on the season while the Bulldogs raised their record to 3-2. It was the fourth-overtime contest in five games for the Hornets with the team finishing 0-3-1 in that span. Junior midfielder David Rios and freshman forward Patrick Nelle each finished with three shots, respectively, to lead the Hornets.
Matadors Mania
Despite finishing last week with a 1-1 record (5-2-0 this season), the Matadors dropped one spot in the Far West poll sponsored by NSCAA/adidas.
