LMU Men's Tennis Earns Fifth Place Finish in WCC Tournament (2000 Final Release)

THIS WEEK - The Loyola Marymount University men's tennis team concluded the 1999-2000 season with a 11-13 overall record and 2-4 mark in West Coast Conference regular season play. The Lions placed fifth at the WCC Tournament in Santa Clara, Calif. The 2000-01 season begins with a series of individual tournaments in the fall.

JUST BRIEFLY - LMU finished the year with a two-match winning streak, defeating San Francisco and Saint Mary's in the WCC Tournament. The Lions can also boast an 11-4 record over their final 15 matches. Loyola Marymount's 11 wins for the season exceeded the team's 1998-99 victory total by two.

MOST RECENT MATCH REVIEW - at San Francisco: LMU picked up some steam heading into the WCC Tournament, defeating San Francisco 6-1 on April 5 in the Bay Area. Loyola Marymount extended its win streak over USF to five meets. vs. Portland: The Lions suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament, falling to Portland 4-3 on April 7. The two teams were tied 3-3 following singles play, but the Pilots took two of the three doubles contests to advance to the championship bracket. Carsten Eisenbarth and Carsten Bitchkus were solid for LMU in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles spots, each earning straight-set victories. Leopold Graeubig earned the Lions' third singles victory with a 7-6, 4-6 (10-8) thriller over George Agapitos at the No. 2 position. vs. San Francisco: Rebounding strongly from their opening round defeat, Loyola Marymount handily defeated USF 6-1 on April 8 to advance to the fifth place match of the WCC Tourney. Eisenbarth, Graeubig, Bitchkus, Mahmoud Karim and Michael Levin each picked up straight-set singles wins as LMU defeated the Dons for the second time in four days. Loyola Marymount also breezed through doubles competition as the teams of Bitschkus/Graeubig, Eisenbarth/Erik Nelson-Kortland and Kyle Rasmussen/Thad O'Grady picked up victories. vs. Saint Mary's: The Lions matched their fifth place finish from the 1999 WCC Tournament with a convincing 5-2 victory over Saint Marys on April 9. LMU's top three of Eisenbarth, Graeubig and Bitschkus came up big once again, each recording victories. Levin also recorded a win (6-2, 7-6) in the No. 6 position to help seal the victory. For the second straight match Loyola Marymount swept all three doubles matches.

LMU HEAD COACH - Bjorn Bork completed his first year as head coach of the LMU men's tennis program, guiding the Lions to an 11-13 overall record. Under Bork the Lions recorded their most victories since the 1996-97 season, when LMU also won 11 matches. Prior to coming to LMU, Bork was an assistant at Cal Lutheran. A 1994 graduate of Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, Bork earned his bachelors degree in English.
