Los Angeles, Calif., Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 - The Loyola Marymount men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 win over Cal State Northridge Sunday afternoon under rainy conditions at Sullivan Field. Sophomore Arturo Torres tallied his third game-winning goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining in the contest.
The Lions improved to 10-5-1 overall with the victory and remain 2-1 in the West Coast Conference as they took a break from conference action. CS Northridge falls to 6-11 with the loss.
CSUN took an early 1-0 lead when the Lions scored an own goal just 11 minutes into the game. LMU rallied back from the deficit and tied the game at 1-1 when senior forward Spencer Reeves recorded his third goal of the year off the assist from Torres. Torres' assist, his tenth of the season, now gives him 14 in his short career, one shy of the LMU career mark.
For the third time this season Torres found the back of the net with just under two minutes to play and gave the Lions the eventual 2-1 win. The 6-1 native of Wilmington, Calif. scored the game-winner after dribbling around two Matador defenders and taking a hard 12-yard shot. Senior midfielder Jaret Asuncion picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
LMU outshot CSUN 21-7 and kept Matador keeper Christian Perez busy, Perez recorded nine saves. Lion keeper Dan Sheridan played in his fourth game of the season, he tallied four saves on the afternoon.
The Lions return to action next Sunday, Nov. 5 when they resume WCC play. LMU plays host to Gonzaga at 2 p.m. on Sullivan Field.
