Los Angeles, Calif. Loyola Marymount sophomore women's tennis player
Penka Fileva won the Saint Mary's Invitational ITA Championship, which concluded Sunday in Moraga, Calif.
Fileva, a native of Sofia, Bulgaria, entered the 32-player tournament as the No. 2 seed and swept Fresno State's Courtney Jantz 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. Meanwhile fellow Lion sophomore Jennifer Mitchell advanced to the semifinal round, defeating Janice Mota of Sacramento State 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Jantz by a 6-4, 6-4 margin.
LMU senior Holly Freudenberg won a pair of matches before having her run stopped by Mitchell, the tourney's No. 1 seed, in a hard-fought rond of 16 match (7-6, 7-6). In addition junior Andrea Lord, an junior at Loyola Marymount, posted an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory in her first round match against Kerri Roemer of UC Davis.
The team of Freudenberg and Lord made a strong run in the doubles draw, advancing to the semifinals. Following a first round bye, the duo upset a team from host school Saint Mary's 8-1 and then upset the fourth-seeded team of Christine Limbers and Nicole McCord from Santa Clara by an 8-4 score. However Freudenberg and Lord could not get past California's Sekita Grant and Morisa Yang in the semis, losing 8-5.
Back in Southern Clifornia last weekend LMU senior Milica Cukulic enjoyed some success at the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiates, reaching the semifinals of the Flight I singles draw. She posted victories over UC Riverside's Cheryl Bauzon, Stephanie Reynolds of Long Beach State and Elanor Luzano of host school CSUF before falling to Cal Poly's Danielle Brandlin 6-3, 6-4. Cukulic then teamed with junior Beatrice Sagaria-Rossi for an 8-3 first-round doubles win over Long Beach State's Reynolds and Melissa Hlebasko.
The Lions return to action next Friday through Sunday, Oct. 27-29, at the Fresno State ITA Tournament.
