    Lions Looking for second exhibition victory...The Lions will play their second exhibition game of the year this Tuesday when they meet up with the "Freddy Bass Playas" at Gersten Pavilion. The team is comprised of Southern California residents who were former collegiate players at Pac-10 and Big West Universities. The "Playas" adapted their name from the stage name of Utah Starzz (WNBA) Head Coach Fred Williams, a noted Jazz enthusiast, who recently recorded his first CD, "Let's Ride". Tuesday night's match will be the last of three exhibition games the Freddy Bass Playas will play this year. The "Playas" split their first set of games, defeating Cal State Fullerton by a 27-point margin, 87-60 but falling to Cal State Northridge, 71-58.

    Notables

    LMU wins exhibition opener...The Lions opened their 1999-2000 exhibition season last Tuesday in winning style with a decisive 82-62 win over SBC Prerov, a women's professional team from the Czech Republic. Sophomore guard Bryn Britton scored a team and game-high 22 points, while senior guard Lynn Brown came off the bench to add 21 points. LMU had a total of four players finish in double figures. Sophomore guard Rosa Bernasconi had twelve points, 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. Junior guard Taryn Reynold finished with 11 points, two rebounds and three assists and senior center Dana Hunter had six points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. The Lions trailed SBC early in the first half, but used a 13-0 run midway through to take a 37-831 halftime advantage. With the score tied 41-41 with 15:48 remaining the Lions outscored SBC 14-5, capped by Taryn Reynold's three-point basket with 8:27 left to take a 65-46 lead. The Lions led by no fewer than 17 points for the remainder of the game.

    Lions signs three for 2000-2001 season...Head Coach Julie Wilhoit announced, three high school standouts, including two California preps, signed National Letters-of-Intent with LMU Monday. Adrienne Slaughter, Michele Brown and Jasmin Matthews will all step out on the court for the Lions next season. Adrianne Slaughter, a 6-2 forward currently attending Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colo., is a talented player who will help LMU next year in the frontcourt. The team MVP a year ago, Slaughter averaged 10.0 points, 10 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals last season as junior prep. An honorable mention all-state pick in 1999, Slaughter also earned first-team All-Centennial League honors while leading Cherry Creek to the Class 5A State Championship game. Her efforts in the state-tournament helped her earn all-tournament honors. Michele Brown, a 6-0 guard currently attending James Logan High School in Union City, Calif., is a welcomed addition to LMU's backcourt. Brown, the team's MVP last year, was a 1999 all-district pick as well as a first-team All-Mission Valley Athletic League selection. Earning a spot on the 1999 All-CIF section squad, Brown averaged 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game last season as a junior. LMU's final signee is Jasmin Matthews, a 6-0 guard who is currently in her senior campaign at Corona Centennial High School in Corona, Calif. Matthews was a 1999 first-team All-Mountain View League and All-Riverside County selection. Averaging 16.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game, Matthews was the team's MVP last season.

    Five Top Newcomers to Join Seven Returning Letterwinners at LMU...Joined by five top newcomers, the 1999-2000 Lions are preparing to accomplish even greater feats this season. Last year, the team saw numerous triumphs, beginning with a 78-66 defeat of Austin Peay (Nov. 28) which put an end to a 21-game losing streak. The victory set the stage for what was to become a very thrilling, but always challenging season for the Lions. LMU earned two victories on buzzer-beating three-point shots, twice honored as the Compaq Play of the Week. As a team, the Lions broke numerous records, including the largest margin of victory ever against a conference opponent with a 20-point defeat of San Diego. Despite ending the season with a first-round loss to Saint Mary's in the WCC Tournament, the Lions managed to accumulate its best record since the 1995-96 season. With four top freshman recruits, and the addition of one redshirt transfer, LMU hopes to build upon its success into the next millennium.

    LMU Slated to Finish 7th in the WCC...Despite finishing sixth in the WCC conference last season, the Lions were voted to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll. Pepperdine is the top choice, receiving five first place votes. Saint Mary's, last year's tournament champion is projected to finish second and Santa Clara was picked to finish third.

    Injury Update...The Lions lost freshman guard Allison Gerber for the season last week. Gerber tore her ACL in her left knee during practice on November 6th. Gerber will take a medical redshirt for the year and is expected to make her collegiate debut on the courts during the 2000-2001 season.

    Wilhoit Update...Head Coach Julie Wilhoit is entering her fifth season at the helm of the LMU women's basketball program. She was named the fourth head coach in the program's history on June 30, 1995. Wilhoit came to LMU after a two-year stint at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford. With the Lions, she holds a 28-81 (.257) overall record and 11-45 (.196) record in West Coast Conference play. Wilhoit completed her 11th year as a head coach and owns a 149-151 (.497) overall record.

    Reynolds enters her third season in the Lions' program as an active playerplayed in 27 games last year with four startsa quick and powerful player off the benchaveraged 23.0 minutes of playing timehit the game-winning three-point shot against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 1)ranked 22nd in the conference with 8.5 points per gamescored a season-high 22 points and collected nine rebounds at Hawai'i on December 21her nine rebounds also tied a career-high marktallied five assists against Wyoming (Dec. 4).
