Hrynkiewicz Dominates as Lions Continue Best Start in School History

LOS ANGELES — LMU swept Gonzaga 4-0 Friday morning at the LMU Tennis Center, improving to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in West Coast Conference play as the Lions continued one the program's best ever start.

LMU secured the doubles point on the strength of two wins on courts two and three before rolling through singles to put the match away in clinical fashion. Gonzaga fell to 6-9 and 0-3 in WCC play.

Kuba Hrynkiewicz was the story of the day for the Lions, delivering the most dominant singles performance on the card. The freshman dropped just one game across two sets, dismantling Gonzaga's Tom Dunlop 6-1, 6-0 in a statement-making showing at the No. 5 position.

Alex Padro turned in a composed straight-set win at No. 4, defeating Nicholas Reeves 6-4, 6-2. Padro dug out of an early deficit in the first set before pulling away, then cruised comfortably in the second to close things out.

Cesar Cruz delivered the clinching point, defeating Jay Fairclough 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to seal the sweep for LMU. The performance capped a strong week for Cruz, who was named WCC Singles Player of the Week on Tuesday after going a perfect 3-0 in singles the previous week. Cruz also teamed with Emil Kindhult to win the No. 2 doubles match 6-4 over Oscar Rashed and Nicholas Reeves, helping set the table early.

Max Wuelfing built an early stranglehold in the top singles spot, racing through six consecutive games against Oscar Rashed to claim the first set 6-1. Rashed responded to take the second set 7-5, and the two were in the first game of a third set when the match was clinched.

LMU continues WCC play Saturday when the Lions host Portland at the LMU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 a.m. PT.
