LOS ANGELES – Myron Amey Jr. would not let LMU lose on Wednesday night in the penultimate game of the regular season. The fifth-year senior scored 31 points, his most since joining the program, to lift the Lions to a 67-66 win over Washington State.
LMU trailed by 15 points at halftime after the two teams shot on different ends of the spectrum in the opening 20 minutes. The Cougars shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field with seven threes, while the Lions missed all 10 shots from three and shot 28.6 percent (10-for-35) from the field.
Amey hit the team's first three on his opening shot of the second half. Amey accounted for LMU's first seven points of the second half. LMU opened the second half on a 17-4 run to pull within two points, 43-41, with 13:52 to play. Amey scored 13 of those points and
Jan Vide hit back-to-back shots for the other four.
Rodney Brown Jr. hit his first three of the game with 7:28 to play and followed it with a layup to pull the Lions within a point, 52-51.
LMU cut the deficit to one point four consecutive times before Brown's three with 3:35 on the clock pushed the Lions ahead for the first time since the score was 2-0. Brown's three started a run of seven unanswered points.
The Lions made 10-of-11 free throws in the second half, including the front-end by Issanza that extended the lead to four points with seven seconds left. That four-point cushion proved to be pivotal as Washington State hit a three to make it a one-point game with 0.2 remaining. LMU finished the game 14-for-17 from the line.
LMU only made five threes in the game, the fewest in a win this season. The Lions also tied a season-low with six turnovers, highlighted by just one in the second half.
Amey is the only Lion to hit the 30-point plateau this season. The last LMU player to score 30 or more points was
Will Johnston against Gonzaga with his 33-points against Gonzaga on February 15, 2024.
The Lions will honor the senior class on Saturday ahead of the final home game of the season. This year's honorees include
Kevin Carney,
Nakyel Shelton,
Rokas Jocius, and Amey. The game is set to tip at 6:00 PM with the senior ceremony slated to begin about 30 minutes prior.
