MALIBU, Calif. – LMU men's basketball was unable to find a way to close out the lone matchup against Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon. The Waves closed out the game with the final nine points to comeback and defeat the Lions, 90-89, in a game that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes.
Josh Dalton scored a career-high 15 points in the loss after shooting 4-for-5 from three and 3-for-3 from the line. The Lions built up a seven-point lead with
Josh Dalton's completed four-point play at 15:29 in the first half.
Pepperdine responded with an 8-0 run to take an 18-17 lead back before another Dalton three pushed the Lions up two.
A second 8-0 run by the Waves in the opening half led to the home team retaking the lead and holding it until
Rokas Jocius's dunk pushed the Lions back on top by a point with 4:55 remaining until halftime. Jocius started the game and recorded double digit rebounds for the first time in his career to go along with his seven points.
With Pepperdine ahead by three, Myron Amey, Jr. hit a game-tying three with 2:50 on the clock to even the score at 47-47.
The Lions carried a two-point lead at halftime, 56-54. Both teams shot lights out to open the game. Pepperdine started the game 10-for-12 and shot 70.4 percent (19-for-27) in the first 20 minutes. LMU opened the game 8-for-10 and shot 63.6 percent (21-for-33) in the first half.
After Pepperdine retook the lead a minute and half into play, a 9-0 run early in the second half pushed LMU back on top by eight.
Jan Vide started the run with a three and layup before Amey extended the lead with back-to-back shots.
LMU held the lead for the remainder of the half before the Waves closed the game with the final nine points and took a one-point advantage on a dunk with eight seconds left. Amey couldn't add to his team-high 25 points with a last second look.
Vide scored 17 points and led the team with five assists.
Both teams finished the game shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. LMU capitalized on 17 points off turnovers and only gave the ball up seven times themselves.
The Lions will play on the road again one week from today with a game at San Diego on Feb. 21.
