Max Wuelfing delivered a dominant second-set bagel, and
Emil Kindhult clinched the match with a comeback victory as LMU defeated Grand Canyon 4-3 on Friday at the LMU Tennis Center.
Wuelfing, playing at No. 1 singles, cruised past Andreas Loizas 6-3, 6-0, blanking his opponent in the second set to give the Lions an early lead. The shutout performance set the tone for LMU's balanced attack.
Kindhult provided the decisive point, rallying from a first-set loss to defeat Tristan Berard 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The victory gave LMU its fourth point and clinched the dual match for the Lions (3-0), who have now won their first three matches of the season.
The Lions' success began in doubles, where they won two of three completed matches to claim the doubles point. Alex Padro and Wuelfing defeated Daniel Jankoski and Brice Patoux 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Kindhult and
Kuba Hrynkiewicz topped Berard and Loizas 6-4 at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match between
Cyrus Ahmad/
Darius Tamaddon and Diordan Macababbad/Charlie Pade was left unfinished at 6-6.
Hrynkiewicz also contributed in singles, defeating Macababbad 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.
Grand Canyon (5-1) got wins from Jankoski at No. 3 singles (7-5, 6-2 over Ahmad), Patoux at No. 5 (7-6(7-4), 6-2, 7-5 over Padro) and Pade at No. 6 (4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over
Sascha Nothdurft).
