Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite Strong LMU Start, #7 Gonzaga Wins Big in Potential Final Matchup

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Lions held a 14-4 lead early, then it was all Gonzaga the rest of the way as the #7 Bulldogs claimed an 82-47 win in potentially the final meeting between the programs.

LMU went on an 10-0 run after Gonzaga's opening basket to take a 10-2 lead. Gonzaga missed nine straight shots after their opening layup and missed eight threes in a row to start the game. Rokas Jocius and Jalen Shelley both hit a pair of shots in the paint as part of that initial spurt.

The Lions took a double-digit lead on Rick Issanza's basket at the 13:43 mark, jumping ahead 14-4. A scoring drought of over seven minutes followed and allowed the Zags to come back with 15-unanserered points of their own and took a lead back.

Nakyel hit a corner three as LMU used a 5-0 run to tie the game at 19-19 with 4:24 remaining in the half. Gonzaga scored the next 14 points as part of a larger 24-5 spurt to take a 33-19 lead at the break. Shelton scored eight points with a pair of threes in the game.

Rodney Brown Jr. hit back-to-back threes in the second half early in the second half. Brown led the team with 11 points and hit three second half threes.

A 21-0 run over the next seven-plus minutes blew the game open as LMU's shooting struggles continued. The Lions shot 30 percent (19-for-63) from the floor in the loss. Gonzaga shot 53.7 percent (36-for-67) from the field, the best shooting percentage for an opponent against LMU this season.

The Lions finished with 47 points on 19 made field goals, both season lows.

Jocius led the team with seven rebounds to go along with his six points.

The two teams will not meet again, unless it is in the WCC Tournament in March. Gonzaga is set to leave the West Coast Conference at the conclusion of the season.

LMU will return to Los Angeles to host San Francisco on Thursday night. The game will tip off at 8:00 PM and air nationally on CBS Sports Network.
