SEATTLE, Wash. – Turnovers haunted LMU all game as the Lions committed a season-high 20 in the game at Seattle. The Lions outscored the Redhawks after halftime but were unable to overcome the large second half deficit before falling on the road, 69-59.
The Lions held the lead twice in the opening minute and a half. The first time came with
Rick Issanza's opening basket. The second came as
Jalen Shelley hit a go-ahead three off the assist from
Jael Martin, who earned his first-career start heading into the game. Issanza scored four points, recorded three blocks, and totaled a career-best four steals in the game before fouling out.
Seattle responded with the next seven points before
Rokas Jocius' layup cut the deficit back down to two. After another Seattle field goal, Shelley's layup at 13:51 to bring the score to 11-9 in favor of the home team would be the closest LMU would get the remainder of the game.
The Redhawks ended the first half on a 14-2 run with Shelley's dunk the only points for the Lions over the final six minutes of the half. Seattle took a 35-18 lead into the locker room. Shelley scored 13 points and was one rebound away from consecutive double-double outings.
LMU used a 22-4 second half run to cut a 28-point deficit down to a 10.
Nakyel Shelton started the run with the first four points before Myron "MJ" Amey Jr. scored 12 of his own including three threes. Shelley capped it off with a full court steal and slam to bring the score to 56-46 with 6:52 to play. Amey scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the second half.
Seattle responded with 13 of the next 19 points to build their lead back up to 17.
Josh Dalton and
Rodney Brown Jr. hit threes during that stretch. Brown totalled 11 points with a pair of threes.
The Lions closed the game on another 7-0 run over the final 2:02 of the game to bring the final score to 69-59.
LMU outshot Seattle, finishing at 45 percent (21-for-47) from the floor.
This weekend, the Lions will take their scheduled bye from West Coast Conference action before returning to Gersten Pavilion next week to start a new two-game homestand hosting Oregon State on Wednesday and Santa Clara on Saturday.
