PULLMAN, Wash. –
Jan Vide took over in the second half scoring 21 of his career-high 28 points to help LMU erase a double-digit second half deficit. Each team led by double-digits as Washington State comeback in the first half and used a game-winning and-1 in the final 10 seconds to close out the game, 78-76.
The Lions started the game fast, scoring 15 of the first 17 points to take an early 15-2 lead. Vide hit back-to-back shots to open the game then back-to-back threes from
Jalen Shelley started an 11-0 run for LMU.
The largest lead of the game came at the 10:39 mark of the first half as
Aaron McBride knocked down a three to push the lead to 14, 24-10. McBride scored nine points before fouling out.
The defense held Washington State to 7-for-21 shooting through the first 16 and a half minutes, however the Cougars closed the first half with 11 unanswered points to take a 34-32 lead at the break.
Early back-to-back threes from
Rodney Brown Jr. and Myron "MJ" Amey Jr. gave LMU a brief lead less than two minutes into the start of the second half. The pair combined for 20 points in the game after both hitting two threes apiece.
The Cougs rebuilt their leads and led 54-44 with 12:59 remaining.
During a stretch of the second half, Vide took over, scoring 19 of LMU's 24 points over an 11-plus minute stretch.
Brown scored layups twice with less than five minutes to play to bring the Lions within two both times. Brown finished with a dozen points in the game.
A converted and-1 from
Jalen Shelley with 2:51 to play pulled the Lions within one, then a pair of free throws from Brown gave LMU a lead with 2:20 to play. Shelly scored 15 and finished with a game-high-tying nine rebounds.
Brown hit a go-ahead three with 1:08 on the clock after LMU fell behind by two. Then Vide hit two free throws with 26 seconds on the clock to once again give the Lions a 1-point lead, 76-75.
Washington State converted an and-1 on their final offensive possession to take a 78-76 lead with 10 seconds to play. LMU was not able to convert a final shot bringing the game to a close.
The Cougars hit 10 threes against LMU, tying Florida Atlantic for the most against the Lions this season.
The Lions outscored Wazzu in the paint, 36-22, and benefitted from 14 points off turnovers compared to 4 for the Cougs.
The game featured nine lead changes.
