LOS ANGELES –
Jalen Shelley recorded game-highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday night's loss to Portland. Despite the sophomore's effort, the Lions had trouble offensively throughout the game, falling to the Pilots, 71-58.
Shelley opened the game with a three, which ended up being LMU's largest lead of the game, at 3-0. This is Shelley's third 20-point effort of the season
Portland went on an 8-2 run from there before Myron "MJ" Amey Jr.'s tied the game at 8-8 with 14:12 to play in the opening half. The two teams traded threes as
Rodney Brown Jr. answered with a game-tying triple with 13:15 on the clock.
The Pilots did not trail the rest of the way and used a 17-0 run to extend their lead to 20 points with just over four minutes to play. Portland took a 39-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Rokas Jocius started an 8-0 second half run to cut the deficit to 12. Jocius hit a jumper off an offensive rebound and then knocked down a three for five of his nine points.
Brown started a 12-5 run with a pair of threes to help LMU cut the deficit to 11 with 8:18 remaining in the game. Brown finished with 10 points with three made threes.
AJ Thomas scored all eight of his points down the stretch and converted a three-point play with 50 seconds left to pull the Lions within 10, 68-58.
LMU struggled from the floor, shooting 32 percent (18-for-57) and 29 percent (8-for-28) from three.
The Lions only have one game next week, the team's first conference game at Seattle since the Redhawks joined the WCC ahead of the this season.
