LOS ANGELES – The Lions battled but came up short against No. 19 BYU on Friday night at Gersten Pavilion, falling 3-0.
LMU struck first with a service ace from
Kayla Lopez and a kill by
Sophie Stephenson. The set stayed close early, but a Cougar 3-0 run gave them a little breathing room, and they kept rolling from there. BYU pulled away late with another run and closed out the first set, 25-16.
Set two started rough for the Lions as BYU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but LMU answered back.
Maddie Boerstra's kill sparked a 4-0 run that brought the Lions right back into it, and a kill from
Isabella Ocampo set up by
Delfina Schuh gave LMU their first lead of the set at 17-16. Things stayed tight all the way to 22-22, but BYU snuck away with the 25-23 win.
In the third, both sides traded points early before BYU grabbed momentum with a 4-0 run to go up 15-11. The Cougars then went on a huge nine-point stretch that put the set out of reach. LMU got one more on the board, but BYU finished it off, 25-13, to take the sweep.
The Lions are back in action Thursday, Sept. 18, in College Station, Texas, where they'll face New Hampshire at the Texas A&M Invitational.
